Hypnosis for DEPRESSION
We have many requests regarding the use of Therapeutic Hypnosis for Depression, and here are some details on what Hypnosis can and cannot do for depressed people.
First of all, and this is very important, only your doctor will be able to make a diagnosis and direct you to the most appropriate medications or therapies for you. Do not hesitate to ask your doctor if Therapeutic Hypnosis is indicated in your case.

The different facets of depression
Depression is a silent suffering that affects millions of people.
Between emotional fatigue, loss of motivation and withdrawal, it profoundly alters the quality of life.
Blues, temporary or seasonal depression, depression…
Depressive states have various intensities and are characterized by symptoms – which often combine – and which affect the emotional, mental and physical state of the person.
The most common symptoms are:
- Intense sadness and loss of interest in activities that were once enjoyable
- Chronic fatigue and sleep disorders
- Difficulty concentrating, motivating oneself, feeling helpless
- Decreased self-esteem, sometimes a feeling of guilt or the feeling of being a burden to others
- Negative thoughts about oneself, the world, or even suicidal thoughts
Sometimes the symptoms set in gradually, so it can be difficult to notice something is wrong.
Hypnosis for depression: When to consult?
In fact, we often see people in therapeutic hypnosis consultations who do not talk about depression.
They come to alleviate certain symptoms, such as sleep difficulties or loss of self-confidence.
But very quickly they will talk about sadness, loss of energy, loss of desire for life pleasures, anxious rumination…
And also, sometimes they refer to a knot in the stomach, physical heaviness, mental fog…
If these people are not medically or psychologically monitored, we will of course refer them to their doctor.
Nevertheless, most of our clients have already done a lot of things: consult a doctor, take sleeping pills, even go to the hospital to address the issue of the knot in their stomach, thinking that it was a digestive problem because they have either lost their appetite or on the contrary eat a lot.
We have met people who were depressed following a breakup, following a difficulty at work or a burnout. There is also depression in older people or teenage depression in adolescents, when they understand that they are going to become an adult and leave the world of childhood.
Periods of transition in life – with a loss of bearings, pages of life to turn, accepting to leave important things behind – can be conducive to depression. Some people will go through these changes easily, within a few months, others will need a lot more time to deal with these changes.
Hypnosis is therefore a great complementary tool to medical and psychological follow-up to help the person take a step back from their situation, identify and change their negative self-talk and alleviate certain symptoms.
It is often an opportunity to work on oneself: to get through this period, to access one’s resources, to be able to release the emotions that are present…
But this beneficial work will have been worth it for the person during this period and for the future.

Hypnosis for depression: How does it work?
While medical and psychotherapeutic treatments are essential, therapeutic hypnosis can be an interesting complementary tool for those suffering from depressive symptoms. Don’t hesitate to ask your doctor for advice.
Therapeutic Hypnosis is an approach to access the unconscious, to identify the resources already present in the person, to identify and modify negative thought patterns and to promote better well-being on a daily basis.
In the case of a depressive state, this will involve, for example, working to:
- Modify negative thoughts and limiting beliefs:
Depressive states are fed by negative automatic thoughts (“I’m worthless“, “Everything is screwed up“).
Under hypnosis, the person will be able to identify them and replace them with more helpful beliefs, make sure that their unconscious hears that there is something else after, that they will not always stay in that situation, in that darkness or in that fog.
- Access inner resources:
Hypnosis also allows to access personal resources, to allow the person to remember that they have been able to bounce back, to implement changes, to make decisions, to accept new situations. To fight against the feeling of powerlessness and increase self-confidence.
- Reduce symptoms of stress and anxiety:
By inducing a state of deep relaxation, hypnosis promotes the appeasement of the nervous system, thus reducing the state of tension and anxiety in which depressed people often find themselves.
- Reactivate motivation:
If the person’s energy is very low, they may stay locked up at home or even stay in bed all day. Therapeutic Hypnosis can have an important role in encouraging the person to take action even if they lack the motivation or courage to do so.
Thanks to positive suggestions, the hypnotherapist will be able to stimulate the desire to reconnect with pleasant activities and restore meaning and pleasure to everyday life.
When going through a life transition, we often need change: what gave us pleasure in the past no longer tempts us and we look for other things, other external stimulations.
- Finally, the relationship with your hypnotherapist is of course essential:
As in any helping relationship, you need to feel comfortable.
Empathy, listening, sometimes also feeling reassured…
