Hypnosis for BRUXISM
Bruxism, the grinding, rubbing or clenching of teeth, is a common problem and we get many requests to help reduce bruxism with hypnosis.
Once dental and medical causes have been ruled out, hypnosis is a really interesting tool for helping bruxism sufferers.
What is Bruxism?
Bruxism is the unconscious clenching and grinding of teeth. It can occur at night (nocturnal bruxism) or during the day (diurnal bruxism).
Bruxism can have a significant negative impact on health and quality of life: fatigue linked to poor-quality sleep, tooth wear out, dental pain, muscular pain in the jaw and neck, headaches… And in the long term, even serious dental damage and functional disorders.
People affected by bruxism often don’t realize it.
The problem may be identified by the dentist during a routine check-up, or during a consultation for muscular pains in the face and neck, or it may be detected by those around them, particularly their life partner.
Causes of bruxism
The causes of bruxism are varied and can combine, making each case unique.
Emotional stress and anxiety are often the main triggers of bruxism.
Accumulated tension can manifest itself in teeth grinding, especially during sleep. Stressful events or major life changes, such as job loss, divorce, or other difficult transitions, can trigger episodes of bruxism.
Sleep disorders, such as sleep apnea, can also amplify nocturnal bruxism.
But don’t overlook the impact of dental problems and medical factors.
Or even the side effects of certain medications or the use of certain substances or drugs.
If you become aware that you’re suffering from bruxism, consult your dentist as soon as possible.
He or she will be able to rule out physiological causes and suggest, for example, night-time dental protectors.
Your doctor will also be able to identify drug-related causes.
“A man doesn’t cry, he grits his teeth…”
Sometimes hypnotic awareness can be astonishing…
Like this young man suffering from bruxism, with jaw pain that was spreading into severe headaches. His doctor had already carried out the necessary tests…
Under hypnosis, his body spoke to him 😊
At the time, he was going through a difficult period on a personal level, and had become so used to the injunction “a man’s got to grit his teeth” that it was his jaw and teeth that were suffering!Letting go of his emotions helped a lot…
Hypnosis for Bruxism: How does it work?
Once medical or dental causes have been ruled out, Therapeutic Hypnosis is a valuable tool for people suffering from bruxism linked to stress, anxiety and poor sleep.
Hypnosis is an altered state of consciousness in which a person is both in a state of deep relaxation and heightened concentration.
It’s also a creative state in which it’s easier to modify perceptions, thoughts and behaviors.
Hypnosis for bruxism will work on 3 main levels:
- Reduce stress and anxiety
- Influence unconscious behaviours, in this case teeth and jaw clenching
- Improve sleep quality for nocturnal bruxism.
Hypnosis to reduce stress and anxiety
By inducing a state of deep relaxation, hypnosis can first help to significantly reduce stress and anxiety levels. And when a person is in a state of hypnosis, the mind is more open to working on thoughts and emotions associated with stress and anxiety. To reduce the frequency and intensity of bruxism linked to these psychological factors.
Hypnosis to raise awareness and better manage unconscious behaviors
Bruxism is generally an unconscious behavior, especially in the case of nocturnal bruxism.
Hypnosis, by encouraging muscular relaxation, can raise awareness of tensions that are so present that the person is no longer even aware of them. The hypnotherapist can then help develop strategies to modify these behaviors. For example, suggesting relaxation techniques, working with metaphors to free the jaw and reduce the tendency to clench the teeth.
Hypnosis to improve sleep quality
Hypnosis can be used to improve sleep quality by helping the person to achieve a deeper state of relaxation and by modifying thought patterns that may be disrupting sleep. By improving sleep quality, it is possible to reduce the incidence of nocturnal bruxism.
The Benefits of Hypnosis for Bruxism
Hypnosis is a non-invasive method, which means it doesn’t require medication or surgical procedures.
It helps to reduce stress – a major factor in bruxism – and improve sleep quality, which is particularly beneficial for those suffering from nocturnal bruxism.
Finally, hypnosis sessions can be tailored to the patient’s specific needs, enabling a personalized approach especially when bruxism is linked to particularly stressful periods in life.
Hypnosis therefore offers a very interesting approach to reducing bruxism, particularly by targeting the underlying psychological and emotional factors.
