Fear of flying, or aviophobia, is one of the most frequent fears in our consultations.
Some people feel a simple apprehension before a flight, while others are paralyzed by anxiety just at the thought of getting on board. This phobia can be linked to different causes: bad experiences during rough flights, fear of heights, loss of control, turbulence, or plane crashes relayed by the media.

Understanding the fear of flying
The fear of flying is based on an archaic survival mechanism. The brain perceives being locked in a small space, suspended in mid-air, as a dangerous situation. It then triggers a stress response: increased heart rate, sweating, dizziness, and even panic attacks.
In many cases, this fear is fueled by false beliefs like,
“Flying is a dangerous means of transportation.”
“If I don’t control the situation, I’m in danger.
” Turbulence means the plane is going to crash.”
These thoughts are often rooted in the unconscious, making fear difficult to reason consciously. This is where hypnosis comes in effectively.

Reprogramming the unconscious to soothe fear
Hypnosis is a technique that allows you to bypass rational blockages and access the unconscious directly, where irrational fears are anchored.
The hypnotherapist uses visualization techniques and positive suggestions to gradually desensitize the brain to the triggers of anxiety (boarding, plane noises, feeling of take-off, turbulence, etc.).

The support is done in several stages with tools adapted to the client such as:
- Calm anchoring: a relaxation reflex is installed that can be reactivated in case of stress before or during the flight.
- Hypnotic suggestion : reassuring phrases anchor new positive perceptions of the plane in the mind.

Hypnosis for Fear of Flying: When to Consult?
Some people suffering from the fear of flying contact us 2 days before going on vacation: they thought they could overcome their fear but when the time of departure arrives, stress and anxiety rise when it is not panic attacks.
Sometimes we manage to help them out in a hurry and to desensitize them to help them leave.
And we do a phone or video session before the return flight to help them get back!
To avoid this stress, we advise you to consult in Hypnosis for fear of flying well before a trip to have time to do 2-3 sessions and work on desensitization to the different sources of stress (boarding, entering the plane, starting the engines, taxiing, takeoff, turbulence, etc.), install the calm anchors well…
And to do a session again about 2-3 days before your flight to consolidate all this.
Anchoring, Self-hypnosis and complementary exercises
It will be useful to continue the work between and after the sessions with your hypnotherapist, especially to reinforce the calmness anchors installed during the sessions.
We can also advise you on controlled breathing or cardiac coherence exercises.
Sometimes your hypnotherapist will record part of the session for you to listen to regularly in self-hypnosis before and during your trip.
These tools will allow you to anchor a state of serenity in a natural and progressive way.
