Hypnosis for TICS

Hypnosis for TICS

I blink frequently – especially under stress – and it’s really awkward in professional discussions with my clients…

My son has developed a kind of throat clearing as soon as he has to speak and his classmates make fun of him at school…

Tics are sudden, rapid, and recurring movements or sounds.
They are often perceived as involuntary, although they can sometimes be temporarily removed through conscious effort. Tics are common in children, but they can persist into adulthood and, in some cases, get worse.
These manifestations can be a source of embarrassment, stress, and even psychological suffering, especially when they are poorly understood by those around them.

Hypnosis is a very interesting tool for reducing certain tics – especially those related to or amplified by stress.

Hypnosis for TICS

The different types of tics

Motor tics

Simple motor tics are short, sudden movements of one or more muscle groups, such as blinking, shrugging, facial grimaces, or shaking the head.

Complex motor tics are more elaborate and may appear intentional, such as when a person repeatedly touches objects or people, jumps or spins, or imitates the movements of others (echopraxia)

Sound and respiratory tics

Sound tics and respiratory tics can also be simple such as throat clearing, sniffing, grunting, tongue clicking but also complex as when a person repeats certain words or phrases (language tics), repeats words or phrases of others (echolalia) or even socially unacceptable words (coprolalia).

Tics can be transient (lasting less than a year), chronic (lasting more than a year), or associated with more complex disorders, such as Tourette’s Syndrome.

The special case of Tourette’s Syndrome

Tourette’s Syndrome (TS) is a neurological disorder characterized by the presence of multiple motor and sound tics, often associated with other disorders, such as ADHD or obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD).
If you suspect Tourette’s Syndrome, a clinical evaluation by a neuropsychiatrist is a great first step.

Hypnosis for TICS in children

Tics in children

Tics are particularly common in children, they usually appear between the ages of 5 and 7, with a peak in frequency around 8-12 years of age.
In most cases, these tics are transient: they last a few weeks or months before disappearing spontaneously.

However, for some children, tics can persist or intensify, especially during times of stress, fatigue or major changes (back to school, moving, etc.).
If the tics persist, worsen, or impact your child’s social or school life, we advise you to consult your pediatrician as soon as possible.

Hypnosis for tics

Hypnosis is a complementary approach that is increasingly used to help people suffering from tics. It is based on an altered state of consciousness, allowing access to unconscious resources to better manage symptoms.

How does hypnosis act on tics?

  • Reduction of stress and anxiety:
Hypnosis helps to reduce emotional tension, often linked to the aggravation of tics.
  • Reinforcement of voluntary control:
By working on suggestion and visualization, hypnosis helps to develop a better mastery of involuntary movements or sounds.
  • Altered unconscious patterns:
Some tics are reinforced by unconscious habits or associations. Hypnosis makes it possible to “reprogram” these patterns.
  • Improved self-confidence:
By reducing the shame or fear associated with tics, hypnosis promotes better self-esteem.

Some techniques used in hypnosis for tics:

Your hypnotherapist will of course adapt to your specific situation but in general we use 3 main types of techniques:
Positive visualization: Imagining situations without tics to build confidence.
Anchoring: Associating a soothing gesture or thought with a state of calm.
Dissociation: Learning to “detach” the emotion linked to the tic to reduce its intensity.

Hypnosis to better manage tics

Testimonials about Hypnosis for Tics…

Sophie (sound tics with throat clearing)
“I cleared my throat all the time, especially during meetings at work. I was afraid that my colleagues would think I was weird or rude. With hypnosis, I discovered that this tic was linked to an anxiety that I no longer even consciously felt. Thanks to visualization exercises and anchoring, I have managed to significantly reduce this tic and when it remains to be aware of it. Today, I feel more confident, and I’m no longer afraid to speak up in meetings.”

Thomas, 14 years old (eye tics and repeated blinking)
“Before I started hypnosis, I blinked all the time, especially when I was stressed at school. The other students laughed at me, and I felt like I couldn’t help it. After a few sessions, I learned to relax by imagining a soft light around my eyes. Now I blink less often, and when I do, I feel less panicked. Hypnosis helped me regain control!”

The limits of hypnosis for tics

Hypnosis is not a miracle solution and has certain limitations:
Effectiveness is variable : Some patients respond very well to hypnosis, while others see little or no improvement.
The need for comprehensive support: Hypnosis must often be combined with other approaches: cognitive behavioural therapy (CBT), medication if necessary, etc.
Client engagement: Hypnosis requires active participation and open-mindedness. The results depend on the motivation and regularity of the sessions.
The absence of permanent healing: Hypnosis allows you to better manage tics, but does not make them disappear permanently in all cases.

When to consult a hypnotherapist for tics?

    Hypnotherapy is particularly indicated when:

    • Tics are aggravated by stress or anxiety.
    • You are open to an alternative approach.
    • Tics have a significant impact on your quality of life.

Towards a holistic approach for tics

Hypnosis offers an interesting way to reduce the intensity of tics and improve the well-being of those concerned. However, it should not be seen as an isolated solution, but rather as a complementary tool in a comprehensive approach.
Each individual is unique, and it is by combining different methods (hypnosis, CBT, family support, etc.) that the best results will be obtained.

As hypnotherapists, we always recommend an initial medical and/or psychological evaluation to determine the best therapeutic strategy.

If you or a loved one is concerned by tics, do not hesitate to consult a professional to explore the solutions adapted to your situation.
